Old Harlequin Auctioneers & Valuers was founded in 1993 when Mike retired from the Metropolitan Police CID, New Scotland Yard, having worked on the Flying Squad and the Regional Crime Squad as well as Arts & Antiques and Asset Tracing Squads.
Mike had honed his valuation skills whilst on extended attachment to all the major London auction houses in the 1970s and continued to gain practical experience through valuation and expert witness evidence in the Courts. Mike Bucknole
As a member of a Home Office Working Party attempting to structure and nationally standardise the recording of stolen property, Mike helped introduce Property Marking, utilising the owners' postcode, a system similar to "Object ID" as promulgated by the Getty Institute today. During this time he also appeared on television for several weeks in Shaw Taylor's "Police 5" programme, assisting viewers to trace stolen property.

The company, an independent family business of the highest integrity, held weekly auctions at Watford Auctions for 7 years, then diversified to offer a more personal and prestigious service. Mike has gained a diploma in Antiques and a distinction in English Furniture at the London Institute. He completed a BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art Valuation, Antiques (History & Collecting), at Southampton Institute gaining a First Class Honours degree. He is a member of both The Regional Furniture Society and the City of London Gramophone and Phonograph Society.
He regularly writes articles on Fine Art Antiques and related subject matter and will be undertaking a thesis for a PhD on aspects of the life of the Bushey artist Sir Hubert von Herkomer.
